This week in the MSA

November 27, 2006

Dear MSA Member,

Sisters are just so special. So special that we decided to write a limerick for you (referring to sisters) to tempt you to attend the Sisters’ Events Committee meeting on Wednesday, AND arranged for a GBM right after where you can opine on its sheer brilliance while munching on FREE food. So go highlight Wednesday, November 29, 2006 on your
calenders. Like, right now, yeah.

Also this week, be sure to check out MSA and Campus for Christ’s Interfaith Dialogue, happening on Thursday. And if you attend the Tajweed halaqa, make note of the room change. All this and much more (including limerick for sisters) on this week’s MSA-L.

  1. After much deliberation and hours of contemplation, HNIC Shura has come to the decision that this was more like Sad Hour.

With all due respect to whoever has written this…why does the MSA blog have to be written in such a sickly sweet and overly gushy manner? I ask because it actually turns me off of attending the advertised MSA event.

  3. As salaamu alaikum,

I agree. This blog is not for matrimonial purposes (I hope) so why does the MSA have to write like this.

Also, for the sisters Eid gift exchange. There are many sisters with hijab in those pictures. Did you get their permission to put their pictures up? It doesn’t make sense when a sister wants to cover her self for the sake of Allah, and then she is being put in a position to be stared at. As a sister, tell me, how does a brother, lower his gaze, when these pictures are right in front of him. Of course he can make an effort, but its like he’s being forced to look becuase they’re staring him in the face.

Please take precautions next time inshaAllah :)

  4. Wa’laikum assalaam,

Just to clarify, the writing on the MSA-L is meant to be humourous and in some instances, even mildly sarcastic – but it’s all in good fun. I’m not entirely sure how the writing was interpreted as being for matrimonial purposes, but my sincere apologies if it was offensive; it certainly wasn’t meant to cause offense. And I will be more careful in the future, Inshaallah.

As for the sisters’ Eid event, I was not present, but I was operating under the assumption that the sisters whose pictures were being taken knew that the camera used was the MSA camera, and the pictures were being taken for the purpose of putting them up on the blog. We haven’t received any complaints from the sisters whose pictures are up, so I assume that they have no problem with it. Nonetheless, we will try to gain explicit consent from sisters in the future, Inshaallah.

Thank you both for your comments.

  5. I second the motion to take permission. Even in the past pictures have been used either for publicity or for MSA displays without taking permission (of brothers and sisters)

If you do take pictures simply let individuals know that the pictures may be published or if you know the person(s) in the picture, take his or her permission first.
